International Cairo festival for children's films inaugurated

On Wednesday evening Faozi Fahmi, the chief of the Egyptian Arts Academy and the General Union of Arab Artists opened at the Sheraton Cinema in Cairo, the eighth international festival for children's films, whose prizes will be announced next Tuesday evening at the same place and time.

Farouk Hosni, Egypt's minister of culture, could not attend the opening ceremonies because of his travels abroad.

The new slogan of the festival "Sinbad" was offered to the artist Samiha Ayoub at the dedication of the eighth session to the name of the past Saed El Din Wahaba ; the establisher of the festival.

For the first time, the festival will honor educator Fadela Tawfik, director Mohmoud Rahmi, painter Adel El-Batrawy and writer Yaakob El Sharony for contributions through their art to children's issues:

At the opening ceremony of the festival, organized by the Arab Artists Union along with the Egyptian Cultural Development Fund and the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, the prize-winning French film "Microcosmos" was presented. The film, directed by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perennou was shown at the Cannes Festival in 1996.

At the end of the festival, the Moroccan film by Mohamed El-Abazy, "The Other Side of the River" -- the only long Arabic film produced for children in the history of the Arabic cinema -- will be presented. It was produced in 1982, and it was shown at the Berlin International Festival for Children's and Youth's Films -- the most important festival of that kind in the world.
