Reduction could be coming in Japanese aid to Egypt
Egypt-Japan, Economics, 3/24/1998

Due to the financial crisis the countries of southeast Asia are undergoing, Japan decided to reduce its external aid by an average of 30% starting this current year.

Kwitchi Mayaki, the first secretary of the Japanese embassy in Cairo, stated that Egypt will not be affected by such a reduction, but the level of Japanese aid depends on the importance of the projects provided by Egypt to warrant Japanese donations. These donations could be increased or decreased according to the importance of the projects, he said.

The Japanese policy toward giving aid to Egypt was revised when Japan found out that it provided Egypt with medical equipment which was not properly used due to the operators' lack of skill on these machines, which were neglected until they were damaged.
