Iraq rejects conditioned reconciliation with neighbor states
Iraq, Politics, 3/21/1998
Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf said his country rejects conditional reconciliation with the countries in the area and renewed Iraq's interest in the revival of the Arab Union.
This is in reference to the conditions Kuwait has placed on normalizing relations with Iraq.
Sahaf said that Iraq is working to resume diplomatic relations with Syria soon. He described the American "double standard" policy as a failure, and reiterated Baghdad's desire to normalize its Arab relationships.
Meanwhile, Sahaf said Iraq is interested in implementing the agreement signed with UN's Annan concerning the inspection of presidential sites, but he asked the other parties to be committed to the agreement, mentioning Russia, China, France, and demanded impartiality in the formation of the special committee to give advice to the UN Security Council on lifting the sanctions.
This follows recent statements by UN's inspection team leader Richard Butler who called on Iraq to be forthcoming with its documents about the alleged Iraqi destruction of Iraqi weapons programs so that the UN can expedite removing the economic sanctions.
