Turkey for improving relations with Syria
Turkey, Politics, 3/19/1998

Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem yesterday said that he discussed with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa means of improving bilateral relations between Syria and Turkey.

In a statement to the London-based Middle East daily, Cem said he agreed with al-Sharaa to continue meetings, adding that he and al-Sharaa agreed to work to improve relations between the two countries and to discuss problems with a new outlook.

Cem added that his country is interested in establishing relations with both Syria and Iraq, especially economic relations.

He continued that by its declared initiative on regional cooperation in the ME region, Turkey intends to back Iraq economically, to lift its sanctions, preserve its territorial integrity and establish a zone free from weapons of mass destruction.

Deputy spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry Sarmid Atajinli said yesterday that the Doha meeting between Cem and al-Sharaa was intended to establish grounds for bilateral relations between the two countries. In a press statement he made today in Ankara he added that talks currently held by the Iraqi deputy Foreign minister Saad al-Faisal in Ankara aim at maintaining political consultations between the two countries and reviewing bilateral relations.

He indicated the mutual interest shown by Iraq and Turkey to develop bilateral relations, adding that Turkish - Iraqi relations will be improved in parallel with the development of the relations between Iraq and the UN.
