France regrets Israel's behavior towards Cook
Regional, International, 3/19/1998

France expressed its regret over the events that took place during the British Secretary Robin Cook visit to Jabal Abu Ghneim settlement in occupied Jerusalem.

A spokesman at the French Foreign Ministry said that his country supported Cook's decision on visiting Jabal Abu Ghneim, "We do not understand the reaction of the Israeli Prime Minister on this occasion, nor his attitude towards Mr. Cook. Mr. Cook reminded of the European position, which is widely known."

The spokesman referred to the EU statement issued last February in which the EU asserted that building settlements in the occupied Arab territories is in contradiction with UN laws and "the freeze of which is a necessary condition to restart the peace process."

The spokesman added: "For several months, there have been talks on American thoughts, but there is nothing tangible until this moment."
