1500 officers in the Israeli army sign a peace message
Israel, Politics, 3/18/1998

1500 high-ranking officers of the Israeli army signed a statement asking for progress in the peace process between Palestine and Israel and for the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the West Bank as called for by the Oslo convention.

The statement warned that missing such a historic chance to achieve peace, might lead to the outbreak of a war or an uprising and would be a reason for a disaster in coming generations.

In the message, directed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the officers said "that his government prefers establishing settlements" to resolving historical disputes. The statement said that security could be achieved by peace and asked Netanyahu to work for peace.

This message came on the 20th anniversary of a similar message signed by 1000 officers, sent on March 8, 1978 to then-Israeli Prime Minister Begin in which they asked him not to miss the chance to achieve peace with Egypt after late Egyptian President Al-Sadat's visit to Jerusalem in 1977.
