Regional, Politics, 3/17/1998

The 31st session of the council of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union opened on Monday in Sanaa with the participation of delegations representing all Arab parliaments.

Yemen's vice president, Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi, made an inaugural speech on behalf of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. He spoke about the critical situation in the Middle East peace process due to Israel's policies and its non-commitment to UN resolutions.

Yemen's Parliament Speaker Sheikh Abdullah al-Ahmad stressed that peace cannot be established unless Israel withdraws from the Syrian Golan Heights, south Lebanon and Palestine.

For his part, chairman of the Arab Parliamentary Union Ahmad Fathi Srour talked about the Arab - Israeli conflict and stressed the importance of Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories to achieve stability and security in the region. Srour also pointed to the activities of the AIPU and its concrete attempts to strengthen Arab solidarity and establish the Arab common market.

Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly Abdul Qader Qaddoura said that just and comprehensive peace is "our basic goal in our region, which suffers from conditions because of violations of the UN charter and resolutions by forces which tend to aggression and spreading their hegemony on other peoples."

He stressed that ME peace can not be realized unless talks are resumed from the point they reached when they broke off. He said that the peace process should be based on UN resolutions adding: "We, in Syria, are sure that others' violations and aggressions [in remarks to Israel] according to multifaceted schemes will not obstruct us from being confident of our nation's might and credibility."
