Jordan denounced comments by Israeli minister Sharon
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 3/17/1998
Israeli Infrastructure Minister Ariel Sharon that Israel will kill Hamas Leader Khalid Mishal, even after the failed assassination attempt in Amman last fall.
Jordan's acting premier and minister of information Dr. Abdulla al-Nusour said during a meeting with press that Sharon's comments, if proved true, are offensive and do not serve the cause of peace.
"The statements of Mr. Sharon were irresponsible, ill timed, and faulty," Nusour said.
"He did not discuss with any Jordanian responsible at any stage that their preference is to assassinate Khalid Mishal away from Jordan," he stated.
"How rude, how humiliating is this issue if the statement was made by Minister Sharon to us all it injures our feelings. It provides another reason for those who are reluctant to join peace process," he said.
Nusour also said that planned talks later this week in Washington between King Hussein and President Clinton of the US will cover bilateral relations, the Middle East peace process and the Iraqi crisis. Referring to the dispute between Iraq and the US, Nusour said, "Jordan believes that dialogue is the best way to solve problems."
The government will present to Jordan's parliament before closing its current session a new electoral draft law characterized by egalitarian leap concerning a public debate on a draft law regarding management of savings funds.
He explained that the aim is to protect the savings of employees and make investments of those funds which will produce constructive results.
He said that the proposed law will make sure that the funds' elected boards and not the government will be restricted to drafting rules for investment.
