Syrian FM: Israeli proposals on 425 a ploy
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 3/16/1998
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on Sunday described the Israeli bid to withdraw conditionally from south Lebanon as an Israeli ploy to avoid the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 425.
In statements to reporters in Doha, which he is visiting to take part in the OIC ministerial meeting, al-Sharaa said the bid is a new maneuver by the Israeli government to undermine the essence of UN resolution 425.
He said UN resolution 425 provides for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from south Lebanon, adding that if Israel is serious, it would withdraw unconditionally.
"Syria has always stood by Lebanon's interest," al-Sharaa said, adding that "any attempt to separate the two tracks and to impose any conditions on Lebanon will be totally rejected, because Syria's and Lebanon's interests are one and inseparable."
He went on to say that any move that does not help achieve just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East through the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions will be rejected. He demanded that pressures be exerted on the Israeli government to force it to resume peace negotiations. He also demanded a commitment to what had been agreed upon.
