OIC ministerial conference opens in Doha
Regional, Politics, 3/16/1998
Works of the ministerial conference of the Organization of the Islamic Conference convened in Doha on Sunday.
At the opening session Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani said the Middle East peace process is the main issue that should be given top priority at the conference, because its stalemate would threaten the region's peace and security, and endanger world peace and security.
The Qatari Emir stressed the importance of a commitment to a just and comprehensive peace on all tracks according to UN resolutions, Madrid terms of reference and the land for peace-principle. He called on Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights and south Lebanon and allow the Palestinian people to enjoy their national rights and establish their own independent state with Jerusalem as a capital.
He added that it is distressing that the peace process has reached such a critical situation resulting from Israel's lack of commitment to its obligations and from its violation of international law and defiance of the international community. The Emir called on the international community and the peace process cosponsors to pressure the Israeli government so that peace can reign in the region.
