Resistance group claims first attack against Israeli troops
Lebanon, Military, 3/14/1998
The "Brigades of Resistance to Israeli Occupation," an offshoot of Hizbullah, announced on Saturday its first operation against Israeli troops in south Lebanon.
A statement issued by the group said it was marking the 20th anniversary of Israel's first invasion of Lebanon, back in 1978, through the operation.
Hizbullah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah had in November announced the formation of the new group, which he said would allow Lebanese from all religions and political affiliations to join in the fight against Israel. Hizbullah's membership is mainly Shiite.
The communique issued by the Brigades of Resistance on Saturday said its fighters staged three operations against Israeli positions in Israeli-occupied south Lebanon.
It said the group fired mortars and machine guns on Israeli outposts in Barachit, Haddatha and Sweideh. The attack caused damage to fortifications at the posts and caused casualties among the Israeli soldiers, the statement added.
Security sources, however, said they had no information on Israeli casualties Saturday.
The Brigade's communique said the attack Saturday launched on the occasion of Israel's first invasion of Lebanon was to show that "Israel does not understand the logic of law and international resolutions but the logic of force." Nasrallah had said last year that the organization would be financed and trained by Hizbullah.
