Meguid to Israel: Get out of our territories
Lebanon-Israel, International, 3/13/1998

Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdel Meguid, accused Israel of circumventing the implementation of the U.N. resolutions in addition to continuing its daily attacks on Lebanon, destroying Lebanese villages, killing inhabitants, and scattering them from their houses under the claim of Israeli security "as if Israeli security can only be achieved by killing and destroying, and not by withdrawal from occupied Arab territories."

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Israeli attack and invasion of south Lebanon on March 14, 1978, Abdel Meguid said the target of the recently announced Israeli withdrawal proposal is to alter U.N. Security Council resolution no 425 [calling for unconditional withdrawal from Lebanon] and to undermine Arab unity and Syrian - Lebanese relations.

Concerning the Arab League's position towards the Israeli occupation of south Lebanon, Abdel Meguid said the AL emphasizes the importance of Israeli withdrawal not only from south Lebanon but from all occupied Arab territories, stating that Israel's continuing occupation will lead to increasing Arab resistance.

Abdel Meguid praised the courage and firmness of Lebanon's government and people and their insistence on resisting the occupation, asserting the Arab League's solidarity with the Lebanese people in their struggle.
