Algerian strikes end, death of customs man investigated
Algeria, Local, 3/12/1998

After a three-day strike leading to the stoppage of work in harbors and airports around Algeria, customs employees resumed their work once again yesterday. The strike was called to protest police attempts to disarm customs employees.

Meanwhile, the general managers of the Algerian security on Tunisia announced the formation of an investigation committee for the circumstances around the killing of one of the customs men, Mohmed Nabil Berkan, 27, for refusing to hand over his weapon except on his supervisor's orders.

The committee will also investigate the injuring of two soldiers.

Algerian laws dictate that the customs men could be asked to hand over their arms while on duty.

Meanwhile 100,000 Algerian laborers in heavy industries, electronic, and minerals industry participated in a one-day strike protesting against the closing of some factories and companies.
