Jordan's crown prince in Israel
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 3/11/1998
Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan led a high-level delegation to visit Israel after five months of strained relations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince Hassan agreed to continue their dialogue on matters of mutual concern to build up lasting peace between Jordan and Israel. Relations between Israel and Jordan deteriorated late last year after the Israeli Mossad made an unsuccessful assassination attempt on the life of Hamas leader Khalid Mishal in Amman. The recent resignation of Mossad chief Danny Yatom helped defuse the tensions between the neighboring countries.
"The two leaders reaffirmed the need to revive the peace process on all tracks," the joint statement issued after their meeting said. The statement focused on the need to achieve progress by implementing the agreements reached between Jordan and Israel. Crown Prince Hassan stressed that Israel must execute its commitment, "1998 is the year for accomplishing of Israeli troops withdrawal from the West Bank."
Crown Prince also held talks with Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai. The delegation accompanied Jordan's Crown Prince included cabinet ministers, house deputies among them the Speaker Said Hayil Surour, a number of business leaders and intellectuals. Some of those who went to Israel were opposed to normal ties with Israel.
In the course of the meeting held in Tel-Aviv, the two delegates concluded a number of bilateral agreements after a week long series of meetings between officials from both states. "The two sides reached understanding in the areas of water and infrastructure, economic and trade and transportation," Jordan TV reported.
"Crown Prince Hassan's visit brought back to normal relations between both Israel and Jordan," the report stated.
