Annan and Meguid to discuss Iraq and Lybia
Regional, Politics, 3/10/1998
The secretary-general of the Arab League, Esmat Abdel Meguid, will meet with the secretary-general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, at the Arab League headquarters on March 19 during Annan's visit to Cairo.
The discussions will tackle the agreement signed between Annan and the Iraqi government concerning the work of the inspection committee affiliated with the UN and the mechanism of implementing the agreement within Iraq's abidance with U.N. Security Council resolutions.
The discussions are also to address the Lockerbie crisis in light of the International Court of Justice's decision to examine the Libyan complaint. The Arab League adopted the suggestion that the Libyan suspects be judged in the International Court of Justice or in another neutral country to guarantee the neutrality of the judges. The suggestion is supported by the Organization of African Unity, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non-aligned Movement.
The discussions between Annan and Abdel Meguid will also tackle the halted Middle East peace process.
