Egypt rejects request to release Israeli spy
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 3/10/1998
Egypt renewed its refusal of the demand presented by Amir Peretz, the chairman of the Israeli Histadrut [Israel's federation of labor unions], to release convicted Israeli spy Azam Azam during the chairman's recent visit to Cairo.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said he placed great importance on respecting the law and not making exceptions for anyone.
Peretz met with several high-ranking Egyptian officials, headed by Yousef Wali, the Egyptian deputy prime minister and minister of agriculture, and presented a new Israeli initiative for releasing Azam, stating that this could bolster relations between Egypt and Israel and that the Israeli people will appreciate it.
The Egyptian officials who met with the head of the Histadrut said that Azam's case is not political but judicial.
