Algerian - European problems about Mediterranean ministers of interior agenda
North Africa, Politics, 3/7/1998
The Moroccan government is making preliminary communications with European countries in the western Mediterranean to prepare for May meetings between ministers of interior from western Mediterranean countries in Rome.
Arab sources said that the consultations, which include the seven concerned countries, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, should address disputes dealing with terrorism.
The sources said the disputes focus basically on Algeria and the European countries, as the Algerians want to put the cooperation in fighting terrorism at the top of the agenda and try to persuade the European states to impose controls on the activities connected to the prohibited Islamic Salvation Front in political or information fields and in gathering donations through social, religious and cultural associations in western Europe.
The sources said that the Europeans are most interested in measures on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea to fight illegal immigration to Europe, and the Europeans see fighting crime and terrorism as secondary.
