Al-Sharaa wraps up Lebanon visit
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 3/6/1998
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa' on Thursday conveyed a message from President Hafez al-Assad to President Hrawi pertaining to latest developments in the region and the peace process.
Al-Sharaa on Thursday met with Arab ambassadors in Beirut. Talks dealt with current developments in the region, especially with Israeli proposals concerning UN resolution 425 (calling for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon) and developments in Iraq following the success of Arab and world diplomacy in defusing the crisis.
Talks also dealt with the situation in the region and the deadlocked peace process as a result of Israeli policy. Al-Sharaa voiced Syria's solidarity with Lebanon in refusing the proposed conditional Israeli implementation of Resolution 425, noting that the Syrian and Lebanese positions agree on this issue.
The Syrian minister criticized the policy pursued by the Israeli prime minister as violating peace process principles, namely international legitimacy resolutions and the land for peace formula. He stressed the importance of an active European role in the peace process and of reviving peace talks from the point at which they broke off.
Meanwhile, Qatar's ambassador to Lebanon, Muhammad Ali al-Nueimi, who is also chief of the Arab diplomatic mission in Lebanon, said following the meeting with al-Sharaa that all Arab states back Syria and Lebanon in demanding Israel to implement UN resolutions, to withdraw from the Golan Heights and south Lebanon and to carry out agreements signed with the Palestinians.
