EU welcomes recent UN resolution on Iraq

The European Union welcomed the recent UN security council resolution concerning Iraq.

The British presidency of the European Union released a statement in Brussels on Tuesday night in which it urged Iraq to abide fully by obligations it committed itself to with UN chief Kofi Annan in opening Presidential sites for inspection.

The statement said the European Union, which comprises some 15 states, is still determened to ensure the implementation of arrangements relating to increasing humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people.

The statement also linked the inspection agreement to the lifting of sanctions. "Compliance by Iraq with its obligations, repeated in the Memorandum of Understanding, to accord immediate, unconditional and unrestricted access to the Special Commission and the IAEA would allow the Security Council to act in accordance with the relevant of SCR 687 on the lifting
of sanctions," the statement from the UE presidency said.

Iraq through both its foreign minister and deputy prime minister have stated that Iraq will abide by the spirit and the letter of the agreement.
