Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 3/4/1998

Lebanese President Elias Hrawi today received a phone call from President Hafez al-Assad during which talks dealt with conditions in the region in light of recent developments.

Lebanese official sources told the national information agency that President Hrawi thanked President Assad for his response to efforts Hrawi made during his recent visit to Damascus which resulted in President al-Assad's orders to release several Lebanese jailed in Syrian prisons since the Lebanese civil war.

The sources said some 130 Lebanese in Syrian jails will be set free within the forthcoming 28 hours. The sources added that President Hrawi asked Lebanese parties concerned to ensure the delivery of the prisoners on the Lebanese - Syrian borders.

The Lebanese sources said that only 25 Lebanese will remain in the Syrian jails after being convicted of espionage for Israel.
