Hamas: Israel trying to distort martyrdom concept
Palestine-Israel, Judicial, 3/4/1998
Israel is trying to distort the image of Islamic resistance by means of portraying those who blow themselves up in suicide bombings as if they did so for the sake of money, said a leading member of the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas.
Dr. Abdul Aziz Rantisi, former spokesman of Hamas, said in Gaza that the trial of Mohammed Al Anati of Jerusalem for allegedly collecting money on behalf of Hamas members has no grounds at all. "The Israeli lies aim to distort the concept of martyrdom by claiming that Moslems commit suicide for money. Moslems sacrifice their lives to win eternal heaven, not for materialistic gains," said Rantisi.
Anati, 26, from Jerusalem, was arrested last December. He was remanded into custody on Sunday by an Israeli military court until the end of legal procedures against him. He is charged with involvement in the US-based Holy Land Institute which Israel said was behind raising funds for Hamas members who died in suicide attacks in Israel over the past two years.
His relatives denied the Israeli allegations, despite reports by secret service agents who said they searched his house and found secret documents that link him to distribution of hundreds of dollars among families of Hamas members who were either killed in suicide bombings or arrested by Israel.
