King Hussein and British PM discuss outcome of Iraqi crisis
Jordan, International, 2/28/1998
Jordan's King Hussein and British Prime Minister Tony Blair discussed on the phone the outcome of the recent Iraqi-UN weapons inspection agreement. During his discussion with King Hussein, Blair expressed appreciation of Jordan's efforts to contain the crisis peacefully.
"I am optimistic that the deal could be implemented in form," Blair said. "Britain will seek to expand the oil-for-food deal between Iraq and the UN to the aim of easing further sufferings of Iraqi people," he said.
The king said he is optimistic that the deal will be completely implemented by all parties concerned as a prelude to lifting the sanctions imposed on Iraq after the Iraqi army invaded Kuwait on Aug.2, 1990. The leaders also discussed the Middle East peace process and the obstacles facing it, especially on Israeli-Palestinian track.
Blair said his country would work to revive the peace process through implementation of what has been agreed upon by the concerned parties.
Jordan's king reiterated his country's support for the peace process and the Palestinian people until they regain their rights, including the establishment of their independent state on their soil.
