Lebanese resistance takes back Deir Klab from Israeli troops
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 2/27/1998
Lebanese resistance on Friday afternoon destroyed an armored vehicle while confronting the Israeli military buildup, just 200 meters from the enemy Deir Klab site which the resistance has already seized.
Resistance sources said resistance groups confronted an Israeli force while trying to get into the site of Deir Klab and said Israeli helicopters were trying to evacuate the numerous casualties from the battlefield.
Earlier the Lebanese resistance launched a series of operations against Israeli occupation forces in south Lebanon and were able to occupy the site after destroying its bunkers and fortifications. They hoisted resistance banners and flags in its various areas.
Resistance groups also attacked Israeli and South Lebanon Army positions in al-Radar, Balat, Qalaat al-Dbesheh and Kassarat al-Aroush. Lebanese security said that human and material casualties were inflicted at the sites.
Earlier, the Israeli occupation forces bombarded the heights of al-Tuffah district and al-Rafi mount. Lebanese security sources said the Israeli bombardment covered al-Qatrani, al-Sarira and Abu Rashid mount in the Western Bekaa and Qeleya, al-Dalfa and Ein al-Teneh. The occupation forces followed by launching a mopping-up campaign with machine-gun fire on valleys and woods surrounding the sites and roads leading to them. Israeli warplanes also continued to fly mock raids in Lebanese airspace.
Israeli radio reported the resistance attack and the wounding of four of its soldiers.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu today stressed that Israel does not oppose the implementation of UN resolution 425, providing for Israeli's withdrawal from south Lebanon. In press statements he made today and quoted by Israeli radio, Netanyahu said suitable security arrangements should be guaranteed in south Lebanon to enable Israel to withdraw.
The Lebanese government demands unconditional Israeli withdrawal.
