Spokesman: Stability restored to South and East of Sudan
Sudan, Military, 2/26/1998
The spokesman for the Sudanese armed forces, Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahman Sewar al-Khatim, said on Wednesday that the Sudanese army carried out "victorious" operations in the Bahr al-Gazelle (Gazelle Sea) district and in the eastern part of the country.
In a statement to Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am, Khatim stated that security and stability were restored and that the Sudanese armed forces have full control of these areas. The spokesman did not disclose when and where these operations took place or how many causalities were suffered.
He said that trains carrying foodstuffs could reach Owel, one of Bahr al-Gazelle's cities, for the first time since fighting between the Sudanese army and the rebels erupted in the area in January 1998.
