President Mubarak, King Hussein urge Saddam Hussein to abide by UN agreement
Egypt-Jordan, Politics, 2/26/1998

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak sent yesterday his ninth message to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein urging him to implement the agreements signed with the United Nations to avoid any new crisis in the future.

Meanwhile, King Hussein of Jordan expressed his optimism toward the possibility of holding a meeting between US President Bill Clinton and Saddam Hussein.

King Hussein said: "We are not speaking about hopes only," but about facts through talks with US leadership at a high level.

He also warned of the continuation of the Iraqi crisis despite the recent agreement with the United Nations, if there is no direct meeting or discussion between Saddam and Clinton.

"To accelerate such a dialogue is better than to delay it," he said. There are issues that cannot be solved via mediators, he added, "Rebuilding of Iraqi infrastructure, improving its relations with neighboring countries, rehabilitating Iraq and other issues need to be discussed directly."

"When King Hussein makes his good call to open a dialogue between Iraqi authorities and the USA administration it means that Jordan is ready to mediate between Iraq and the USA." Jordan's Foreign Minister Dr. Jawad al-Annani stated.

King Hussein made his call on the basis of future expectations, after Iraq complies fully with United Nation resolutions, he added.
