Terrorists, security forces step up actions in Algeria
Algeria, Local, 2/26/1998

A terrorist group bombed a gas pipeline linking Hass El-Raml and Arzyo Benafta El-Meritart in western Algeria. It was the second sabotage operation aimed at the Algerian infrastructure this week.

The explosion evoked great anger and resentment among the people in the city. Specialized units were dispatched and were able to contain the damage by preventing gas from leaking.

At same time another terrorist group attacked 12 citizens, most of them shepherds from Loha.

Meanwhile, the Algerian armed forces launched wide scale operations and captured 110 terrorists in Asfour mountains Telmessan in western Algeria. Security forces participating in an operation in the El-Babor mountains in Jijel province in eastern Algeria, are searching for one group that is active in the region, and for another responsible for a massacre last Friday in which 15 citizens were killed.

Abdel Hamid Faryan, the head of High Islamic Council in Algeria, said that the terrorist's actions are not in adherence to Islam, adding that the people should be cultured and knowledgeable of the principals of Islam that know nothing of violence, fascism and corruption. The High Islamic Council was formed in Algeria a month before. It is the formal source for issuing legal advisories in Algeria.
