Majali threatens unions in Jordan
Jordan, Local, 2/25/1998
Jordanian Prime Minister Abdel Salam al-Majali said his government will not remain bound by pressures from union members and their attempt to influence Jordanian public opinion, "aiming to destroy the nation and its achievements."
Referring to the latest riots in support of Iraq that effected the Jordanian city of Maan, and speaking about the union support for the banned demonstrations, Minister al-Majali added that the government will start legal procedures to suppress the union's efforts and establish a law preventing unions from practicing politics.
Last Friday the government arrested opposition union representative Leith Shbeilat accusing him of stirring the citizens of Maan to violate the ban imposed on demonstrations and rallying support for Iraq.
The souther city witnessed clashes between civilians and police in which one person was killed and 10 others were injured.
