Chairman of Sudanese Democratic National Assembly to visit Libya
Sudan, Politics, 2/24/1998

A Sudanese opposition source said the chairman of the Sudanese Democratic National Assembly will head to Libya in the coming days to meet the Libyan president Moammar Gaddafi and high-ranking officials.

He will also meet with members of the Sudanese exiles in Libya.

A source told ArabicNews.com that the visit comes within political communications held by the Sudanese opposition with the Arab leadership to open direct discussion and to obtain strong support from Arab states.

The previous Sudanese prime minister Al Sadiq Al-Mahdi visited Libya at the end of last year, meeting with the Libyan president who talked about Libyan ideas with regard to setting up a meeting between all the Sudanese factions and the Khartoum government.

Meanwhile, Sudan's ambassador to Egypt, Ahmad Abdul Halim, on Sunday said that Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir asked him to make contacts with heads of Sudanese opposition groups in Cairo, saying that the contacts aim at consulting with the opposition on the new constitution bill before submitting it to the Sudanese national council.

Most of the Sudanese northern parties have offices in Cairo. These parties announced alliance with rebellions in South Sudan in 1996 in the framework of the "Democratic National Coalition," with Eritrea 's capital Asmara as a headquarters.

The Sudanese national conference, which is a governmental commission, approved last Tuesday the outline of the new constitution bill, providing for the freedom of rallies and setting up of societies.

Sudanese dailies said al-Bashir asked the Sudanese ambassador in Cairo to ask former Sudanese President Jaafar Numeiri to return back home. Numeiri, however, has lived in Egypt since his government was toppled in 1985.
