Egypt-Iraq, Local, 2/23/1998

Thousands of students from Cairo, Ein Shams, al-Azhar, Helwan, Mansour and Zagzig Universities joined in large demonstrations against the United States, while Egyptian police took measures outside the universities' parameters to prevent students from marching into the streets.

Students belonging to the Islamic Group organized a large demonstration in the Cairo universities, chanting slogans against the U.S. and Israel, asking Egypt's government to take more decisive measures toward the U.S. and to expel the Israeli ambassador.

One student stepped on Israeli and American flags, asking the Arab and Islamic countries to voice united support for Iraq. Security forces surrounded the street leading to the Israeli embassy headquarters near the university.
