Bahrainis protest US envoy's statements on threat to Iraq
Bahrain-Iraq, International, 2/23/1998

US State Department envoy David Newton on Sunday was met with anti-US slogans and denunciation saying that the US only seeks to kill the people of Iraq while speaking at a symposium in Manama to justify the use of force against Iraq.

Bahraini dailies issued on Sunday said Newton failed to convince the audience of 300 that US threats of military strikes against Iraq are justified.

Meanwhile, the US ambassador in Manama, Johnny Young said in the symposium that the US had not yet made a decision on the use of force against Iraq. However, President Bill Clinton has sent Newton to several Arab states to explain the US policy.

So far, Newton has visited Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. His trip is also to stop in Qatar, Oman and Kuwait.
