Israeli warplanes bombard south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 2/23/1998
Israeli warplanes on Sunday launched some 11 raids on targets in South Lebanon, Lebanese security sources said.
The sources added that Israeli jets fired at least 23 rockets. An Israeli army spokesman in occupied Jerusalem said: "Israeli warplanes on Sunday morning attacked targets in the area of Jabal Sujoud in south Lebanon." The pilots reported precise hits on the targets.
Israeli warplanes began the raids by firing two rockets at targets in Luweizeh, east to the port of Sidon in the South. Later in the day, two Israeli jets fired rockets on the hills of al-Tuffah district, 40 km south of Beirut.
Lebanese security sources said four Israeli warplanes later appeared to alternate, firing an average of two rockets in each round.
On Saturday, an Israeli helicopter gunship fired one rocket, also at a target in al-Tuffah district, in retaliation for an attack by resistance forces on three Israeli outposts inside Israel's occupied zone in south Lebanon.
The attacks raised to 19 the number of Israeli raids against Lebanon since the beginning of 1998.
On Saturday afternoon Israeli aircraft raided the town of Sujud in al-Raihan district, Lebanese security sources reported.
The raids, carried out by combat helicopters, were timed with clashes which took place between resistance men and an Israeli position in Sujud hill. An Israeli helicopter fired a missile at the town.
Lebanese army anti-aircraft guns fired on the Israeli planes. Security sources reported that heavy artillery, rockets and machine-gun fire were used in clashes at Sujud position.
At 3.15 p.m. Saturday, one of the Lebanese resistance groups observed four Israeli "Merkava" tanks in Baufort. Later in the day, Israeli forces shelled with heavy artillery Sujud, Raihan, Aqmata, Eastern and Western Zoutar, al-Rafi' mountain, and Israeli helicopters bombed with heavy machine-gun fire Sujud and al-Raihan districts.
In the evening, the Israeli artillery shelled al-Hujeir valley, Yahmur, al-Hamra farm, Maidoun, Shokin, Mleta Lweizeh, Tasseh, and Jabal al-Akhdar, Lebanese security sources said.
