Order is restored in Maan after eruption
Jordan, Local, 2/23/1998
Jordan's House of Representatives discussed in a closed session the recent events that took place in the city of Maan in the south of the kingdom. The Lower House dealt with the aims and motives behind those events.
In a statement issued following the session, the House of Representatives said that the people have the right to express their views towards the US threats against Iraq within the limits of law and the constitution.
The legislators called on the government to form a panel consisting of experts to conduct an investigation into what happened in Maan and identify the groups who stood behind the events so that the house can pass a judgment.
It urged the government and public groups to further deepen dialogue among them to preserve the country's cohesion under the circumstances prevailing in the region.
Order and calm have been restored in Maan following the tragic incidents over two days that claimed the life of one person and resulted in the injury of ten others, eight of them policemen.
Jordanian armed forces and police have been deployed there and have restored order. They also adopted measures, including imposing a curfew, to avert the recurrence of violent demonstrations in which citizens fired arms against police.
Police are searching for those who were behind the violence as well as all those who used weapons in attacking police. Jordanian security sources said that 50 army search units were combing the city to confiscate weapons held by its 40,000 inhabitants.
Reports said telephone communications between Maan and the rest of the country were cut off and the Jordanian army was turning back all traffic.
