Jordan concerned about demonstrations
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 2/23/1998
Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Salam al-Majali said that all citizens shall be committed to their duties and rights towards Jordan. Majali made his remarks at a meeting with the heads of information and the media departments in Jordan.
Hinting at the decision to ban all demonstrations in Jordan, Majali said that the government would not allow anyone to bypass legal and constitutional channels when questioning the government about its decisions and measures.
"Jordan's stability is the target of many vicious groups who look after their own interests and those whose practices are negatively highlighted and exaggerated by some Arab media," Majali said. "The national media should get the information from the source directly and disregard the rumors and attempts to cover the reality," he added.
"Some professional unions are trying to politicize the relevant associations to make them deviate from their original objectives," to pressure the government and affect the people, he said.
The government will take all measures necessary to prevent such moves, he said.
