Crown Prince of Jordan meets French President
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 2/21/1998

In continuation of its efforts to solve the Iraqi crisis, Crown Prince Hassan remained in Paris and met with French President Jacques Chirac, Turkish President Suleiman Demirel and senior French officials.

In the course of his meetings Hassan said that it was necessary to solve the crisis via peaceful means and that all the parties concerned should do the utmost to find a solution to the dispute between the UN Security Council and Iraq and to defuse the probability of the war. Jordan's concern are to spare the Iraqi people and the whole region from the disastrous consequences of the expected strike by the United States.

Turkish President Suleiman Demirel said it is necessary to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis and "preserve the integrity of Iraqi territories," he said.

Recently Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz reportedly said the US is about to conspire with Kurdish authorities in Kurdistan Region of Iraq to "establish an independent Kurdish State in the North of Iraq."

The State Department along with Kurdish senior officials denied such allegations by the Turks.

Imad Ahmed of the political bureau of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK charged that Turkey is preparing to occupy the main city of Mosul in the north of Iraq and then merge it with Turkey.

"We are hopeful that Annan's mission in Iraq will succeed." Crown Prince Hassan said.

President Chirac also received Hassan yesterday evening. They focused on the Iraqi crisis and asserted that Saddam Hussein should comply fully with UN Security Council resolutions.
