No more Iraqis allowed to Jordan in case of of war
Jordan, Politics, 2/20/1998
"Jordan has made the necessary procedures to face the consequences of the expected military strike on Iraq," Prime Minister Dr. Abdul Salam al-Majali said. Jordan's needs of foodstuffs and oil products for the country could be met for four months, he added.
"Brothers from Saudi Arabia expressed their readiness to provide Jordan with its needs of oil," but expenses have not yet been discussed, he told reporters.
Majali confirmed that Aqaba port was prepared to receive different imports, particularly oil products, "The port is capable to receiving 12,000 tons of oil daily," he said.
"I hope that diplomacy will be overwhelming to solve the Iraqi governmental crisis with the UN Security Council," he stated. The expected war would affect countries worldwide, he said.
"Jordan will face a real problem if Iraq would be attacked," he said, citing Jordanian tourism, trade and political affairs as areas that would be hurt. Majali said Jordan is still suffering from the consequences of the 1991 Gulf War, " Jordan was forced to receive 1.5 million Iraqi refugees." That was in addition to 350,000 Jordanians living abroad who were forced to return to Jordan and who are still living in Amman, he added.
"The government will not allow more immigrants to come to Jordan," he said.
