Jordan-Iraq, International, 2/19/1998
Jordan's King Hussein received a telephone call from US President Bill Clinton. The two leaders discussed the Iraqi governmental crisis with the UN.
King Hussein reiterated that it was necessary to solve the crisis via diplomatic methods. He praised the efforts made by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to avoid military strikes against Iraq and said he hoped Annan's efforts will bear fruit.
President Clinton, in the course of his call, said that the US does not want to harm Iraqi citizens.
Clinton expressed that if Iraqi President Saddam Hussein responds positively to UN Security Council resolutions and complies fully and literally with them, there will be no need for a military strike.
