Qatar: A solution to Iraqi crisis in two days
Iraq-Qatar, Politics, 2/18/1998
The Qatari foreign minister delivered to Baghdad a communique from the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Ben Khalifa Al-Thani, to Iraqi President Sadam Hussein concerning the Qatari point of view toward solving the crisis between Iraq and the United Nations.
Sheikh Hamad Ben Jasem is the highest-ranking Gulf official to visit Baghdad since the current crisis arose. He traveled to Baghdad in a special airplane, in spite of the fact that his mission is political and the air embargo imposed on Iraq allows only humanitarian missions.
A Qatari source, close to the Qatari foreign minister said the Qatari initiative is not mediation yet it express the Gulf's hopes for a peaceful solution.
On his return to Qatar, Qatar News Agency quoted the minister as saying, "I continue to say that a diplomatic solution is preferable and I believe that it will be the solution that we will see over the next two days."
The foreign minister said his visit provided an opportunity to "meet with the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq and explain to them the hazards involved in a fresh military strike against Iraq and how we could act together to avert such a strike."
