Syrian delegation delivers communique to Mubarak

Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam on Tuesday arrived in Cairo carrying a communique from President Hafez al-Assad to President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.
In an arrival statement, the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, who accompanies Khaddam on the visit, said that using military force against Iraq does not serve anyone, adding that a political solution is the right path to resolve situation.
Sharaa said Syria backs the implementation of UN resolutions, but a military strike against Iraq would require a new UN resolution. The Syrian Foreign Minister stressed the need to settle the crisis by political and diplomatic means and to avoid using the military option.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, who welcomed the two senior officials at the airport, said the current international efforts made by Russia, France and the UN aim at avoiding the use of force against Iraq and at settling the crisis by peaceful means, stressing the need of an Iraqi commitment to implementing UN resolutions.
Talks chaired by Khaddam and Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri were held Tuesday evening between the Egyptian and Syrian sides, dealing with the latest developments in the region and the Iraqi crisis The two sides also discussed the peace process which is still stalemated.
