Arab League condemns claim of Iraqi biological weapons transfer
Regional-Iraq, Military, 2/18/1998
The Arab League has expressed astonishment at US allegations claiming the transfer of Iraqi biological weapons to Sudan, Libya and Algeria as a US congressional report claims.
Arab League Assistant Secretary-General for Arab Affairs Ahmad Bin Hali said these claims add to the tensions in the region, at a time when world and regional efforts are being exerted to contain the Iraqi crisis and to find a peaceful solution.
The ministers in the invovled countries, including the Sudanese state minister at the Foreign Ministry, Mustafa Othman, denied that Iraq has transferred any weapons to their countries.
This is seen by many as a continuation of US efforts to keep the sanctions on these countries and prevent them from being lifted as efforts are being exerted by Libya to resolve its sanctions that were caused by the Lockerbie plane bombing. Algeria has resisted all calls by the US to open itself to UN international inspection to investigate the internal massacres that have been ongoing, claiming that it would constitute interference in its internal affairs.
The US recently issued strong statements against Sudan and has made little secret of its desire to topple the government and is making efforts to that end.
