Israel threatens arrests of Golan citizens
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/16/1998

The Israeli police chief in Galilee, Gen. Avi Telor, has threatened to carry out a large arrest campaign against Syrian residents of the occupied Golan and to levy substantial fines against them.

In a statement to Israeli army radio, Telor alleged that the people of the Golan violated on Saturday Israeli regulations and laws by organizing demonstrations in protest of Israeli policy during their celebrations of the 16th anniversary of refusing Israeli identity cards, which Israel tried to impose on them.

On Saturday, Syrian residents of the occupied Golan clashed with Israeli occupation forces, and four Israelis soldiers were wounded in fierce clashes between the Israeli occupation forces and the Syrian people in Majdal Shams village.

The people of Majdal Shams and Masada villages organized demonstrations on Saturday condemning the 16th anniversary of the Golan annexation decision and protesting against Israel's policy of settlement building and Judaization.

Israeli soldiers used teargas bombs to disperse the demonstrators. The people of the Golan mark February 14 each year as a day on which they renew their refusal of Israel's Judaization policy, and of receiving the Israeli identity cards that Israel tries to impose on them by force.
