Palestinians in Lebanon burn U.S. flags, praise Saddam
Regional, Politics, 2/16/1998
Palestinian refugees in Lebanon's Ein el-Hilweh camp on Sunday burned U.S. flags to the chants of "Death to America" in a show of support for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
Some 1,300 Palestinians in the camp on the outskirts of the southern port city of Sidon marched to protest a U.S.-led effort for a potential military strike against Iraq, carrying pictures of Saddam Hussein and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The crowds also set fire to U.S. and Israeli flags as they cried "Allahu Akbar," or God is Great and "Death to Clinton."
"We want peace. No to U.S. hegemony over the region," they shouted. A banner hanging at the entrance to the camp read: "American murderers: Leave the Iraqi people and children alone."
Most of the demonstrators in the camp were followers of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. There are some 75,000 Palestinians living inside the camp.
