Iran to Jordan: We desire to consolidate bilateral relations
Jordan-Iran, Politics, 2/13/1998
The Iranian attitude toward the recent crisis between Iraqi government and the UN is to avoid all military solutions, Iran's ambassador to Jordan, Mohammed Ali Subhani, said. "Military strikes proved that they could not achieve any goals," he added.
Subhani asked Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to comply with UN Security Council resolutions, "Iraq should not give justifications to foreign powers to strike Iraq." Such a strike could result in dangerous consequences that could not be predicted, he added.
"The international endeavors to contain the crisis have yet not been exhausted," on the eve of the 19th anniversary of Iranian revolution, Subhani said. This increased the probability to explode the situation, he told reporters, but he confirmed that those efforts were continuing.
"Iran qua the head of Islamic Conference tries its best via the secretary-general of the organization to end the crisis peacefully," Subhani confirmed. The efforts being made by the Islamic states were to complete international moves in that direction, he added.
"Iran does not have any intentions on Iraq," he said. "Iranian forces will not commit any military act that may result in the escalation of the situation."
Concerning prediction that Iran will launch a military attack on Iraq if the allies strike it, Subhani said, "These analyses are absolutely not true."
He said Iran was against the economic sanctions to achieve specific ends.
The Iranian ambassador to Jordan spoke of the efforts being made by Iranian leadership to solidify relations with Arab nations particularly with Jordan, "Iran is eager to develop and deepen its political, economic, parliamentarian and informational relations with Jordan."
"There are indications that a joint Jordanian - Iranian process is on the way to developing bilateral relations," he said. "Parliamentarian and economical delegations will soon be in Jordan," he added. "A high-ranking Iranian diplomat will soon be in Amman to push the economic relations between Iran and Jordan forward," the ambassador said.
"Talks are being held between the two sides to restart air flights between Amman and Tehran." he said.
