International interest has shifted from Palestine to Iraqi crisis
Palestine-Egypt, Politics, 2/12/1998

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa held a meeting with Mohamoud Abass (Abu Mazen), a member of the executive committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, who said after meeting with the committee that they discussed the Middle East peace process and the efforts by the U.S. or Israel in addition to the Iraq issue.

After this meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, Abu Mazen said: "There's an understanding between the two points of view concerning these two issues between Egypt and Palestine."

Concerning the shift in the international interest from the peace process to the Iraq crisis, Abu Mazen said the Iraqi crisis had greatly imposed itself on the international area, and all the Arab states and most of worlds' countries are focusing on defusing this crisis and avoiding a war, especially because this would lead to many dangerous consequences, not only for Iraq but for the region's peace and for international peace as a whole.

Concerning what will be done about the lack of progress in the Israeli - Palestinian meetings in Washington, Abu Mazen said the discussions and contacts are ongoing, and Washington's meeting was only one round , thus its failure is not definite.
