Gulf countries to Iraq: abide by UN resolutions
Gulf-Iraq, Politics, 2/12/1998

The Gulf Cooperation Council on Wednesday said the only way to save the people of Iraq from risks and adverse consequences is Iraq's commitment to UN resolutions approved by the international community and accepted by Iraq.

A statement following the conclusion of the 19th extraordinary session of the GCC on the level of foreign ministers called on Iraq to respond to current diplomatic efforts through carrying out all its obligations and canceling restrictions it imposed on UNSCOM's work in order to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi people.

The GCC reiterated the need to preserve Iraq's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Noting the international consensus and the world's commitment to Iraq's full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, the GCC ministerial council held Iraq fully responsible for the sanctions imposed on the Iraqi people who suffer grave consequences, noting the GCC's regret over this suffering.

The GCC stressed that the current crisis is due to the Iraqi government's defiance of the will of the international community -- a matter which exposes Iraq to grave dangers.

The council decided to continue contacts between GCC member states in order to follow up developments and to keep this extraordinary session open.
