Moroccos renews adherence to Houston agreements
Morocco-West Sahara, Politics, 2/12/1998
Morocco reaffirmed its abidance by the Houston agreements to launch the self-rule referendum in Western Sahara. Idris El-Basri, the Moroccan interior minister, informed ambassador Charles Dofair, the United Nations secretary-general's special envoy who is currently visiting Morocco, some Saharan governorates and the Polisario in Tindov, about this position.
Officials in the Minorso delegation said that they wish to solve the problems that resulted from the protests of all who were prevented from registering in the "identity lists."
The goal of Dofiar's visit was to discuss methods of overcoming difficulties posed by protests aroused by the Saharan individuals who claim they possess all the qualifications specified by the UN to be included on the voting lists.
The UN also expressed its optimism toward the possibility of the ambassador's success in his endeavors due to his extensively knowledge about the situation since he has served as a diplomat for the U.S. in north Africa capitals.
Meantime, a statement by the Moroccan Advisor's Council, the second branch in parliament, said that Dofiar examined during a meeting headed by Dr. Galal El-Said in Rabat the role related to the Council's bureau, which relates to gathering support for Saharan issues through participation in public forums.
