Jordan's King, Crown Prince receive European Comission, comment on Iraq
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 2/11/1998

Jordan's King Hussein received Jacques Santer and his accompanying delegation yesterday evening.

During the meeting, the king reaffirmed the importance of a European role in the settlement of Iraq's governmental crisis with the UN and he expressed his wariness concerning the negative consequences of the crisis on the region and the Middle East peace process.

Jordanian King awarded Santer with a Renaissance Medal of the First Class.

Santer also met with Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan to discuss bilateral relations between Jordan and the EU. Prime Minister Abdul-Salam al-Majali, the Speaker of Upper house and other Jordanian senior officials attended the meeting.

Crown Prince Hassan warned against the dangerous situation regarding Iraqi governmental crisis with the UN Security Council, particularly, "after it has become clear that there could be a military strike against Iraq."

"Time is running out. I don't believe that we have much of time to avoid a military confrontation in the region," the Jordanian Crown Prince told the reporters in a joint press conference with Santer.

"Jordan refuses to support any military action against any Arab nation," Crown Prince Hassan said.

"I expect that it will affect Jordan and the other Iraqi neighboring countries negatively if Iraq is hit," he said. "Jordan is not ready to receive Iraqi refugees," he stated, and said Jordan would close its borders with Iraq.

Crown Prince Hassan said he hoped Iraqi President Saddam Hussein would respond to reason and comply with all UN resolutions to solve the crisis peacefully.

Meanwhile Santer praised Jordanian - European bilateral relations. He also called on the Iraqi government to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.
