Jordanian to prevent rallies on Iraq
Jordan, Local, 2/11/1998
No matter what the slogan might be carried, what the reason might be or in where in Jordan it might take place, the Jordanian government will not allow marches and rallies, Jordanian Minister of Interior Nathir Rashid stated.
Jordan as well as our Arab World passed a sensitive stage, he added," We have to maintain our national security and the solidarity of our internal front," he confirmed.
"While the government reaffirms its adherence to democracy and freedom of expression and opinion, this critical situation imposes that the people should keep the utmost discipline," a statement said.
Meanwhile the Governor of the capital, Tal'at al-Nawaisa, issued ban on rallies in Amman. "All gatherings, anywhere, to organize rallies are considered illegal actions," the decision said. "All deterrent measures to execute this decision and to preserve order and citizens' safety will be considered," it confirmed.
The resolution came up after some Islamic groups submitted applications to arrange rallies to support a peaceful solution to Iraq's governmental crisis with the UN after the Friday prayer in Amman.
