Disputes postpone Israeli-Arabs' visit to Damascus
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/10/1998
Palestinian sources told ArabicNews.com that disputes which recently took place between members of Palestinians of "1948 Arab-Israeli" delegation lead to the postponement of their visit to Syria which was to be held after the Lesser Bairam.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry had not yet received a list of the delegation members' names. The list will comprise more than 40 persons, among them 4 members in the Israeli Knesset, Azmi Bishara, Hashem Behamid, Saleh Saleem and Ahmed Saad from the Democratic Communist Party. The delegation will also include representatives of other parties and non-Knesset members.
A dispute between delegation member Mohamed Nefah, who wants the delegation's chairmanship instead of Hashem Behamid, and a dispute between Bishara, the head of National Democratic Association party, and Ragah Gobariah the representative of the People's Movement, are part of the problem in the delay.
Bishara visited Damascus at the end of the last year where he met with Syrian Vice-President Abdel.Halim Khadam and Foreign Minister Farouk El.Sharaa.
The sources said Bishara expressed his disapproval of the communists role in forming the delegation.
