Arab League and Islamic Conference on Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 2/10/1998

The secretary-general of the Arab League, Esmat Abdel Meguid, was in touch with the secretary-general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Ezzedine al-Iraqi, in order to coordinate with Iran, the current head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, to crystallize a joint Islamic-Arab position to avoid a strike at Iraq.

Al-Iraqi said the OIC is exerting great efforts to avoid a US military strike against Iraq. In a statement to reporters upon arriving in Cairo, al-Iraqi added that even if the OIC succeeds in its efforts to avoid a military strike, it stresses the need for Iraqi adherence to implementing UN resolutions.

He added that during his visit to Cairo he will hold consultations with President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt on the peace process and take part in the meeting of the OIC expert committee, stressing the importance of such meetings in dealing with prospects of Islamic action toward the challenges facing it.
