Four arrested for possession of stolen Picasso artwork

Jordanian police yesterday night arrested four people for possessing very expensive tableaus painted by Picasso and statues of Poverty and Freedom.

The works are estimated to be worth $40 million. Initial investigations indicated that the four men received the valuable artwork from several other citizens of another Arab country.

Investigators suspect that the artwork may have been stolen from Kuwait when it was invaded by Iraq in 1991.

"Information reached security apparatus that four people offered tableaus painted by Picasso and other masterpieces for sale via mediators concerning ancient antiques," a security source told reporters. "We put a plan by which we could arrest them and we could seize these expensive works of art," he added.

The investigations are continuing to uncover more information that the arrested individuals may still have.
